If there has to be a test it should be much easier.I agree with the person who said if you have lived here 20yrs you should not have to take one at all as long as you came here legally.I think if you have lived in Australia that long you have more than proved your allegation to the way of life, the laws and the constitution.
People who are born in Australia and even Australian citizens who were born overseas, don't neccessary know much about the topics that are asked in the Asutralian citizenship test.
the citizen it going to be part of my future to comment this is the way to treading people and saying that's l,m a Australian citizen and help me to be apple to go where l like to be in any place over the world
Hi there! Just wanted you to know your program is fantastic and well set up to assist in passing. I wrote my exam yesterday and scored 100% in less than 2 minutes! Thanks for your help.
Robert
I agree, but also some other questions could be included as optional to help the gov assess just how many people have immersed themselves into the Australian lifestyle and culture. Just easy things like foods, music, sports and public holidays for different states.
These questions are ridiculous. Questions should be about rights and responsibilities, not high government and law functions or history and geography. I was schooled all my life in Australia, and I don't know half the history or geography answers, and the law/govt questions are, at best, obscure. These questions have no place in deciding if someone is fit to be a citizen. Furthermore, the question 'Encouraging others to break the law' has an incorrect answer - it is not something we CANNOT do, but something we SHOULD not do (or just 'is illegal'). If Australians CANNOT break the law, our prisons would be empty.
High government is not really needed, but some history is and so is geography. Rights and responsibilities are a must for the test. But some fun optional questions about Australian foods, sports, music and cultural icons and events would also be good so the government can work out how well people are adapting to the Australian culture and lifestyle.

i lived here in sydney for the pass 9 long years im still at the moment studying to do my test next week hoping soon i get my citizenship its good know more about australia i love rugby league meat pies and so but theres more to learn the australian culture
it's suggestible that australia should take the citizenship tests as it's at the moment so as to get naturally talented and hard working people interms of understanding cultural differences and coexistence...
I have lived in Australia since I was a small child (17 years ago) and was educated in Australia's public Scool system and still do not know most of the answers. I was never taught them!
Done these tests and trust I will pass on Thursday as my Family and I are doing them on the day.Must say book was interesting and I enjoyed the history lesson - GOOD
test is good for everyone who want to be come australia .. i stay in australia for 5 year now with my partner and daughter . i try to be australia now i leaning test form book becoming an australian citizen ..
and internet www.australiantest.com ..
Coming to Australia is already a big challenge... so doing the test is almost nothing... I agree to do the test so we can learn even more. If the Australian people don't know the answers it is not our problem, each person should do your best for themselves and for the country they choose to live...
IT IS GOOD TO TAKE AUSTRALIA TEST BECAUSE IT WILL INCREASE OUR KNOWLEDGE OF KNOWNING OLDER THINGS FROM AUSTRALIA.
AS I WILL BE ABLE TO KNOW WHAT HAPENDING BEFORE FROM FIRST PEOPLE WHO CAME HERE ON THE PASS UPTO NOW THIS TIME WHAT HAPENDING!!!
Doing a test on your historical knowledge of Australia, does'nt
make you an Australian. Being
Australian is about taking on the
cultural and lifestyle attitudes
of all Australians.
most Australians don't even know the answers to most questions about our religious beliefs and our history. In the end the migrants would be smarter than the Australians about our own country that seems wrong doesn't it. I am only 13 and believe that all Australians should be tested and not just knew people that come here for a better life.
why we other poeple didnt have test i meanim not going to get my visa beacause of that that not fair i wish there no test the poeple wholive in australi dont know this questions my husband dont know any of this questions please we dont want this test pleaseeeeeeeeeeee
evreything its ok we should know english and whats going on in australia its helping us and the important things its we should ispeict and respict the low its mean everybody the have oby low and we have to know no one up the low in australia thanks
for passing this i have to know about Australia which is very helpful in furure.Because in future i live here.So its make my everyday life more easy and comfortable.
We have already had to do so much to get our visas and then permanent residence - that it is just yet another money making loop that has to be jumped and that does not prove if we deserve citizenship or not....
Answering all questions correctly does not mean that the applicant demonstrates Australian values. You can be a great citizen even if you don't know the answers to many of the questions in the database.
The test requires high proficciency in English and is unfair to migrants who don't have this level of competency. I agree that there are facts and areas that every Australian citizen should know - the test should focus on just these areas.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to comment.
Kind Regards
Zeina
Just did the practice questions with my friend from another country and he failed. But he's as Australian as anyone else I know. I don't think the test should exist, its got nothing to do with being an Australian - its just one more thing for xenophobics to stop people from getting into Australia.
i strongly agree with the idea of Australian citizenship test because i feel that i should know a lot thats going on in Australia before calling myself a citizen and this will help when i'm involved in things like voting. may be one day i will be voted for because i'm active in development/ improvement of the country.
SAM !! THE RESPONSIBLITY FOR EDUCATION LAYS WITH THE FAMILY NOT THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT THESE FAMILIES ARE GIVEN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WHEN THEY GET HERE FOR EDUCATION AND IT IS SQUANDER IN MOST CASES AND THESE SAME PEOPLE WHO YOU SAY ARE NOT EDUCATED SHOULD NOT BE HERE IF THEY DONT WANT TO FIT INTO THE AUSTRALIAN WAY OF LIFE - MOST IMMIGRANTS TODAY ARE GIVEN MORE MONEY EACH WEEK THAN OUR AUSTRAILA PENSIONERS WHO BUILT AND FOUGHT FOR THE WONDERFUL COUNTRY AND HAD PAID TAXES ALL THEIR LIVES - THE TEST IS THERE FOR GOOD REASONONE OF THE RESONS IS TO STOPPING IMMRIGANTS WHO REFUSE TO SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE FROM SITTING IN THEIR AUSTRALIAN SUBSIDIZED HOMES, UNEMPLOYED, LIVING THE GOOD LIFE OFF THE FRUITS OF OUR LABOURS
Sam you need to shut up. People will come here and love it. Australians are just as guilty of wasting tax payer money as anyone, such as your average dole bludger. The fruits of our labors? you act like people fall off the boat and just do nothing while there here, next time you fill up at a 24 hour petrol station think about the Indian guy thats been working a 15 hour shift there trying to support his family, and you tell me they don't have just as much right as anyone else to call Australia home. And turn caps lock off you freaking idiot.
you should first try this test on australian born-citizen and see how many passes this test then you should apply this to other people in this way you will come to know what should be the passing marks.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT AUSTRALIANS BECAUSE IT IS THERE COUNTRY IT IS ABOUT PEOPLE LIKE YOU NAVEED, THESE TESTS ARE THERE TO PROVE THAT YOU WANT TO BE A PRIVILAGED AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN OR WHETHER YOU ARE HERE JUST TO LIVE OFF THE FREE PENSIONS AND BENIFITS WHICH 70% DO AND i ALSO BELIEVE THAT ALL IMMIGRANTS WHEN APPLYING FOR CITIZEN SHIP MUST BE ABLE TO SPEAK ENGLISH AND IF THEY STILL CANT SPEAK ENGLISH AFTER 5YRS ALL FINACIAL PRIVILAGES SHOULDS BE STOPPED
"This is not about Australians because it is THEIR county." Furthermore, because you listed yourself as an Australian. It should be "OUR country". Your argument is invalid because you, yourself can't even use proper ENGURISHHH, GTFO NOOB.

have lived here 36 years consider myself Australian but am not until i do this test i believe it should be on good character not political questions my Austraian born here got then wrong!
Probably the test should first be tried on Australians to see how many get through it.
The results will be amazing and we all know that, don't we !
Migrants who work hard, pay their taxes, abide as good inhabitants and contribute to the society in some form or the other should be spared of this embarrasement of undertaking a Test to "understand" the country better.
But do they even have a choice?
I have been here a long time but history does not make me a better or worse citizen since it is the luck of nature determines where one in born and a choice where to live.It would be more appropriate if a persons attitude and behaviour were assessed.
I think that we should all have a chance but I also think that people wanting to come to Australia should be wanting to come and live here and respect the law and australian lifestyle and be able to speak the language fluently and know the australian law as Australian is giving them a chance to have a better life and we should allow more english speaking people enter australia like the uk and europeans
I COMPLETLY AGREE WITH CITIZENSHIP TEST BECAUSE IT'S AN EXCELLENT WAY TO IMPROOVE OUR LANGAGE AND UNDERSTAND THE AUSTRALIAN LAW BUT THE STRANGE THING IS ALMOST THE AUSTRALIAN PEOPLE DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR COUNTRY
I find it very interesting and important to understand a country I live in,what it's value , ethics and believes are. I'm a part of it. some questions I found a bit unimportant eg if a surname has the right spelling or not. That should not be a reason for getting a answer right or wrong, and to understand the system of the government was not easy for me to understand and it is still not easy. Apart from that very interesting.
what a crock of sh*t this test is!!! i failed it, while 2 gooks and a curry munching indian that didnt know how to speak english got spoon fed the answers next to me by their translators, ive been in australia since i was 6 years old and did 11 years of schooling here. WHAT A JOKE!!!
Buddy, you should've been accepted right away! Looking at your comment, you are bone-deep australian; racist to the core! This test is racist device in origin and it happens to be one of the issue in international human rights discussion.
You foul-mouthed redneck! I can tell you only had 11 years of schooling.
It's very important.
To know that Australia is a democracy.
That there are equal rights for men and women.
That you can freely be a member of and vote for any political party.
That you are free to practice any religion.
And a whole lot more.
Recent immigrants have not known these Australian values and have created problems for Australia.
i want australian citizenship because i don't have one since i have been here for nearly five years.
also if i want go overseas i can't go without the Australian citizenship.
I believe it is unfair that people are expected to sit a test. There are people who have been living in Australia their whol life and don't know the answers to most of hose questions. How can we expect someone who is new to the country to confidently answer these questions. It just puts added pressure on our hectic lives. Seriously consider what you are doing, and how this is affecting people who are in the country.
The citizenship test is in my opinion meaningless, as whether or not someone can answer these questions, does not indicate the value and skills a person has to offer a nation. I believe that if a person wishes to contribute to society in what ever way they can, should be allowed, if the person is healthy and does not have a criminal history. It provides other Australians an opportunity to experience different cultures without leaving the haven of the country which should be celebrated. I am a 'white' Anglo Celtic woman, who grew up in Australia, yet i am sure if I took this test i would likely fail. Growing the population means growing the economy.
I just did the sample, I am 45 years old, a 5 generation Australiam and got 3/5 and I grew up in Australia lol. So what does the test prove? That an immigrant knows completely useless things that wll provide them no help whatsoever in Modern Australian life.
i,m am 22 what happend in australia 100 years before i was born is not somthing i would know about i think the test should be based on current values and morals road rules and so on.
very important to do this test ,not difficult at all, should be easier for old people over 50 year old.it is a good opportunity to know about this country .
Hi I am new here. I am sorry for any reason if this this is not the right place for this but I hope If some one here on www.australiantest.com would be able to
assist me to choose the better choice. The forums here are absolutely cool and certainly plan on sticking around for as long as I am welcome.
i know australian born should not be tested what about compulsory learning of aboriginal language its their country that will prove australian born citizens worthy.
The term citizen should be for all those who have lived in Australia and are still currently living in it, no matter what colour they are or what religion they preach or their background. My wife is Australian citizen who is bought up here in Australia and there are a lot of questions she doesn't know. What I want to say is that people who were born in Australia or were given it as children (due to their parents migrating to Australia when they were young) donâ?EUR?(TM)t know the answers to many of the questions in the test, so why should we ask these questions to other people who choose to be Australian, after leaving their country and coming to Australia. I think these people should get the citizenship without a test, because in reality they have already shown their loyalty and love to Australia. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak my mind.
How on Earth does this test discriminate between people from European and non European backgrounds??!! And even if it did, it's people from non-European backgrounds who normally fail to integrate, especially muslims, it is a well known fact.
Why would the Australian-born citizens be tested? Why is it so hard to understand that if you WANT something, you should PROVE yourself worthy of it; want a cookie? show the money! want vacations? work a year! want a prestigious passport ensuring a lifetime of economic certainty and welfare?? PASS THE FUCKING TEST!!
You just dug yourself in your own hole for asking why would the Australian-born citizen be tested. Sasha already explained to you that new australians should know as much about Australia as the Australian-born citizens, but no one tests them. And by you saying that we should understand that if you want something, you should prove yourself worthy of it. If you are an Australian-born citizen, what have you done to prove yourself worthy of it? Shouldn't you also pass the fucking test?????
Ummmmm Mark I hate to state the obvious, but I wouldn't have thought there was a country in the world that has its native born people pass a test - you get some things automatically by birthright.
I think most people think that if a country is offering something as valuable as citizenship that a small test is a small price to pay ?EUR"it?EUR(TM)s about respecting the country which is giving something so valuable. Check how difficult it is to get citizenship in most countries for foreign born people - often it's not an option at all.
I believe in having a test - it's just a question of whether this test could be improved so it?EUR(TM)s more relevant.
i have been in Australia for more then 17 years and i tried to do the test i found it very hard so how come the new migrant can do it? it is unfair for them
If you can tell me that it makes a better citizen if you know what our national flower is then I may agree! People who migrate to this country have to jump many hurdles before they arrive, why should they then jump even more?
The test is discriminating because 9 out of 10 Australians could not get 15 of these questions right. The fee for sitting the test is outrageous. It would not be tolerated if Australians had to go through this process to get a passport. Where is the fair go ethic in all of this discriminatory test?
What exactly is discriminating about this test? No country equates citizens and foreigners. That's the whole idea of citizenship. If you want to become citizen, you have to comply with a number of conditions. The test is one of them. So who's being "discriminated"? Do you feel discriminated when you pass your drivers licensing test?
It is an absolute disgrace that politicians can test migrants wanting to be an Australian citizen with knowledge test. My Grandfather migrated from Italy, he would be turning in his grave! I cannot answer all of the questions correctly and I'm sure that most other Australians would struggle.
I scored 20 out of 20 in the official test. The official Resource Book is the most important resource but practising on www.australiantest.com helped me to internalise many of the concepts which I was able to use to answer the questions in the official test. The wording in the official test may be different from the wording
I think this test is a terrible idea....
If you asked those that are born in Australia I highly doubt that most 'Australians' would know the answers that are placed into this test (of course I can only go off the sample questions provided)
I'm fortunate in the respect that I always wanted to do well scholastically and I was born in Australia... but those that are not as versed in this would definately struggle.
Just a horrible hassle for those members in society that are productive and do what they can for this country.
My mother works hard doing two jobs, running a family amoungst everything else. She abides by our laws and speaks english perfectly... I have no doubt that she's 'Australian' and think it's a massive waste of her hard earnt dollars to sit this test....should be scrapped
It should have more about Australian income ,recurse, crimes consequences and crimes charts rats, also about Australia ranks between the other nations in deferent in many things.regards
its ok and it should be applied to those who are already citizens to gain the knowledge
and it should be made compulsory to those who came to Australia as migrant
I agree with DEN 100PER CENT.... CLIVE FOX you need to get a reality check. Not even your own countrymen know what their own ,MORALS, IDEALS OR ASPIRATIONS are as a country. I have been here for 30years and I would be the biggest supporter for this country. I will not have anyone knock AUSTRALIA. It has been very good for my family and I would be the first to admit that if we had not moved here, my family would not have all the things that we have now so people like me do not need people like you telling me about IDEALS, MORALS OR ASPIRATIONS ESPECIALLY WHEN ALOT OF YOUR OWN COUNTRYMEN DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE HELL THAT IS. The day I arrived here, I started work which was CHRISTMAS DAY . My husband and I both worked 2 jobs each to get what we wanted and have never looked back. We enjoy what this country has to offer and now we look at the generation coming through. What a nightmare. DRUGS, DOLE, DRUNKS, etc, so I think you should take your preaching to them and lecture those people on MORALS, IDEALS AND ASPIRATIONS before you start writing re: things about other citizens of other countries....
GET A LIFE
The first fleet and the gold fields are not exactly an important item for people trying to make Australia their home if they are coming from countries of low education and much lesser standards of living. Most of them are not even aware that Australia had a gold rush.
people can not avoid getting such information if living in australia. the only difference is the learning source might be in other language rather than english.
My wife came here in 1965 age 12, we are going to go overseas just figured she could get an aussie passport , No way she has to go through this crap of taking a test. She has been a nurse in Australia for 40 years paying tax 5 Chidren 10 grandkids and 4 great grandsons. why she isn't classed as an aussie I wil never know what a load of crap. we have to travel nearly 4 hours for her to take the test.
i didnt get it yet... but to know more the origin and its people of australia as well all the government rules and pilocies... iam happy to be australian citizen someday... nice good people here
Hi Today I had my test. i got 100% pass mark which means all questions I faced done very well. So your practice questioner helped me for sucess. thanks
I am an australian citizen working as a policy adviser in a australian government central agency, and yet i only barely passed the free test (scored about 12/20). I don't think the test is relevant. The test should be targeted at assessing whether te applicants identify with australian culture, society and conomy and their ability to assimilate easily into Australian day-to-day living. Having knowledge of historical/physical facts of the country or even about legislative issues does not mean an individual would be able to settle in with a reasonable standard of living and happiness.
By reading through the test resource book which helping me understand more about the country of Australia, its people, its history and its culture, and the test is necessary for those who wanna be an Australian citizen
the citizenship is like a passport that let me participate with a new culture that i like and let me say formaly i am australian and i believe in freedom, equality and democracy.
I think the idiot who came up with this self serving moronic idea should have this citizenship test shoved up his/hers/its backside. What bloody arrogrance! A country stolen by white predators, the oafish white sports mad population now tries to push it's half assed copy cat culture on those hapless people with no choice but to flee their own wretched countries, laid waste by the Anglo American monster and it's little Aussie cock sucker.Scrap this crap and stop embarassing us real Australians.
So it seems you categorize all people who come here as "... hapless people with no choice but to flee their own wretched countries..." Thats a very patronising attitude.
I really don't think that people should regard the Australian Citizenship test as 'moronic' and a 'disgrace'. The test was created so that people from other countries migrating to Australia could find out about our history and when they passed, they would be able to say ' I'm an Aussie'. You, Monroe, may think that I'm stupid in saying this and that I'm sticking up for the person that created the test, but in fact I don't think that all the questions in the test should be about the government, the gold rush and the referendum. I think that thats not really what we Australians are about. We're about freedom and aussie spirit, BBQ's and beaches, footy and cricket. Migrants shouldn't be obliged to know about constitutions, referendums and gold rushes. It all seems awfully un-australian to me. The questions should change, but we shouldn't scrap the test.
I think you never experienced something bad in your live.
In my eyes you not an real Australien, because you not live what the Australian stands for.The Australians would be ashamed of you,It is good that Australia helps people who are not so lucky!!!!
Try to live in India or in China or even in Germany and tell me then what you think about Australia!!!
iwould like to be an australian citizen but its just too hard for me to apply it too expensive . i have been here for 7 years now i love to be an australian citizen .
it's a bit tricky. being English it has the immediat eappearance of something easy. however, it isn
t and requires some research (reading the booklet).
I think the first part of the test should be about Australian Laws and a bit of Australian background. But i think it should also consider having basic test on English language, eg. short essay why they wanna become an Australian Citizen, What made them decide to become an Australian Citizen, what did they like about Australia etc.. So that we know that they will be able to socialize and communicate with other Australian, without any problem of understanding each other. I am a Filipino young lady who have gone to different shops, restaurant, etc.. and a large amount of these shops do not understand or speak English which leads to a misunderstanding.
I think the test should be mandatory for all members of government on all leavel and have the language of Australian Aborigenes as part of the test and if they don't pass, then they dont get in to government, and see how they go?
The "language of the Australian Aborigines"? people talk about it like it's ONE language - there are different Aboriginal languages and regional variations.
I think that the test should outline very general aspects of Australian culture and people. Basically, what is right and what is wrong to do here in Australia. Currently, some of the questions are very specific, maybe a little bit too much. In my opinion, as long as you can speak English and can in any way contribute to this society; and of course show respect to others - you should be able to become an Australian citizen.
Please put a test that even Australian can answer, since when we test our colleagues they can't answer most of the questions. So why testing foreigners when Aussie don't even know THE history of European possession of the land.
I think this should always be mandatory along with 12 months compulsory English classes with a minimum 70% pass in an oral test before citizenship can be accepted.
Hi Heather,
you could be right as this would certainly pushes literacy up amongst the migrants but remember our own pupils/students and the rest of the adult community would fail the test.
The test was created by politician to satisfy their own needs - hope you know what I'm talking about as you are certainly able to read betwen the lines ?
The questions are stupid. We are not all sport followers.
Basically if new applicants cannot speak fluent english and be able to right as well, entry should not be granted
It is only logical that one would have a basic knoledge of their homeland, be it old or new. The idea of a citizen test is welcomed by anyone who appreciates the opportunities that Australia has to offer. It is a shame that the questions on the test are a struggle to even some born citizens of this country.
Dear Sir,
I am living in Togo in the west africa.I am interested in being tested in order to become australian citizenship.please, tell me where i can sit for the test.
Thank you!
elikplim segbor
We need this test. As a born and bred Aussie, we have to make sure that people have the right ideals about living here, assimilation and our way of life.
I think that everyone should be able to pass a test concerning the country they intend on living in. Regardless! If you can't understand our basic laws, and way of life that has been brought about, then you shouldn't be able to live here!
this citizeship must be inreview my dads done before its not gonna time for us.myspeaking is very good but i can't learn thoes things who born in australia dosen't know aout this country.
it really shouldn't be about our history, it should be more about personality, as thzt shows more about a person than being able to tell us what is the biggest state
I think the test is a great idea and if one does not know much about Australia they can learn all about it when studying for the test. I thought the questions were interresting and enjoyed reading up to find out the answers. Hope I pass when I sit the test?
i LIKE TO DO AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP TEST
BY USE COMPUTER. IT IS GREAT TO LEARN
AND READING QUESTIONS BEFORE TO HAVE
A REAL TEST. IT FAIR IF YOU HAVE MORE PRACTIC FOR CAN PASS IT.
so true.its a freaking history exam and judging by the whining about the exam in here, you people just better study harder, its not a lot to ask that you learn a bit of australian history before you become a citizen, sheesh people, grow up!
Hi sir/madem i am ayaz i need a new citizen my home country is very derty i am coming to australia but i am a poor man i have no created card i am very confuse in our home country please help me.
I think that the test should outline very general aspects of Australian coulture and people. Basically, what is right and what is wrong to do here in Australia. Currently, some of the questions are very specific, maybe a little bit too much. In my opinion, as long as you can speak English and can in any way or form contribute to this society; and ofcourse show respect to others - you should be able to become an Australian citizen.
Agree. I think most migrant will not have problems passing the test as they are generally more hardworking and will study hard for it. I would think how many australians born here can even do half as well. Really embarrassing.
is not difficult when you read the book i think is much easier than last year,,,is wonderfull to know about the australia make you feel good to be part of it ...i agreed, to those who want to be australian citizenship u must take the test to testify yourself that you are welcome to stay long on this country...
because it is like driving a car you study and take you test for 30 minutes and after that it does not matter any more it is the same with the citizenship test if every one is realy hounest about it
It's just so important for poeple who want to be a part of this beautifull country shoud know the values and culture that Australians are determining. I will become a real Australia next year and I am so happy that I can come this far and glad that Australian are so kind to me. Thanks Australia and Australians, expecially those Native Autralians.
I was born here, I am a patriot, the whole point of Australia is to be multicultural, we hardly have a history, a history many of us aren't proud of. I was born in Australia which automatically made me a citizen but was I drilled with ridiculus questions of our nations origins? no. This test and the information that the people need to learn to become "Australian" is very un-australian, saying that just because you don't know certain things about us mean you can't join us, we are a nation built from other nations yet we are rejecting them.
I'm not sure that questions on your country's history are ridiculous - and presumably you were actually asked these or similar when you went to school! I'm not sure why wanting new citizens to know some of the history that made Australia the multi-cultural country it is, is 'un-Australian".
I agree with you Josh, as long as people know what is right and what is wrong here in Australia and can in any way or form contribute to this society; they should be allowed to become an Australian citizen.
I haven't taken it personally, but from speaking to people who have, it is set at the right level. I would suggest however that some people would really struggle.
I want to do the citizen test because i want to become the Australia population, so i hope the you will understand at me and give me the appointment to do the test.
It is only up to the Australian people to decide what is suitable and fair to the immigrants. Australian people elects a Parliament; whoever wins, forms a Government; the Government decides that there will be a test, that means, Australians have decided so.
Wuat about those who cannot elect their parliament, those under 18, who don't get a say? We are the newest generation of Australians and we should be deciding, not previous generations who still who racist grudges.
This is very good because of helping you to know about history and culture of Australia country that you choose to live and be proud of.
The more you know about the country you live the better outcome you get.
please go to sydney any boys high school and get tother
all year 10 students and ask them to pass this test.
this result will show australian gov to decide what is right and what is wrong.
I beleive that if you have lived in the country for a certain amount of years, and have not broken the law, paid your taxes, and not asked any thing from the goverment, plus employ Australians, you should be given some leeway.
i was born in australia,i took the test for fun(online) i knew every answer,so don't say people who are born in Australia know nothing about Australia-its an insult!
Excuse me it was gold that attracted a lot of European settlers in 1850s to our country, they contributed and worked hard to make it what it is today for people from all over the world to come and enjoy
coming from NZ one would think we know as much about Australia as the Australians themselves. How wrong I am. I,ve read through the life in Australia publication and found how rich in culture and history the country is. Not forgetting of course the vast areas that are recorded in each State. So along with the publication and the test I have just completed, I have realised I have only just touch the tip of the history and its modern day activitys of this great country. Looking forward to more information
some questions are created just to make people stress and waist time. what is difference between Arthur Philips and Arthur Philip. this time could be spent taking care of children or volontire work dear sir/ madam
yeah its alrite but i think it must be bit easier because who want to apply for australian citizenship they obviously belong to some other countries and its hard to know aout all these things in such a sort time of period. I agree with the general knowledge test but must be little bit easier .
Hi
Obviously I'm a newbie here. I found this site through google search and I found this forum interesting so I drop by.
Thanks for welcoming me in advance!
some questions r really tough.even Australians dont know much about politics then forget about outsiders.test should be just the basics not about wat happened 200years before....
I think ALL citizens should sit this - including Australians born here. I think thousands of them woulf fail it. And are Aboriginals expected to take this test? It is fine having this test about a potential citixen's knowledge of Australia, but surely it should be something ALL Aussies partcipate in at some point?
I feel its very unfair as I have asked many Australians about these questions, and none of them know the answere either. Its good to test but it should be made more easier.
I have Test on next 2nd of Dec 2009 , still not sure yet , those questions are driving me nuts , complete training test questions for $35? WOW , you are eating me ,well if i didn't make it I'll try for $35 then . I really want to passed , God help me.
The test is like something from a 5th grade test. Most Australian's will not know a lot of these questions and whether an immigrant knows them does not nessecarily make them any more or less 'Australian'.
I have been in australia as a permaent resident for 28 years. I feel that I have paid my taxes all tis time and feel I should not have to take the test just so I can vote.
its good to know about our beautiful country and to learn about it but it should be easier cause when you open the book and read u just get confused of all the information....and the people who lived and born in australia dont know the history of it.... i think its good idea to do it in tafe or as a free course and do test and get it .....much easier and we learn more.
Why wouldn't people want to learn English? English language is very important and beneficial mainly to us - migrants. Also, the more we know about the country we live in the better it is for us. If people want to move to Australia they shouldn't expect that others will look after them forever. I mean healthy and able to learn people.
totally agree with Vera! This is our new home, why trying so desperately to pretend as if we never left? and I think there is no discrimination in asking new citizens to comply with certain rules. After all, Australian government represents Australians who were here BEFORE us, and they have right to decide what kind of people they want and what these people must be able to do or to know.
It is not meant to ensure that somebody is loyal. It is meant to keep people who refuse to assimilate (by not speaking English, for example), OUT of Australian citizenship. Too many people are now talking about how they have right to this and that. They come to a foreign country and pretend to speak their language and so on. Nobody should be given an Australian passport if they can't answer a couple of very simple questions in English, and about the country that have them everything they wanted.
we been here more then 10 years, all of us helped Australia built much better and multiculture then before and we are tax payer so Australia is our home why do we need a test ?
I think it is good to have a citizenship test, so people are do like to becoming a citizenship know and understand about the country, also supporting a good all good only when they become a citizenship in the country
Those who wish to come into our country seeking refuge or a better lifestyle should be allowed to. It is unfair to deny people because they cannot answer a few stupid questions.
i did my test 3 times and i didnt pass :) i dont know what was wrong and i had read bookabout 500 times and now they changing it to harder that what i heard from ppl *GOD BLESS JOHN HOWARD* i know that we have to learn about our new country but not in this way it should be better and my husband born in australia and he cant answer half of them so how can i came from overseas and do this?!?!?! i'm not complainning bout anything but plz make it easy for us and FREE!!!!!! why should we pay $250 to get a citizen it should be free from goverment!!thanks
It should be based around or ways, laws and culture in todays society. There should be test about the fuelncy of their english, and their intentions of living style for them and their children. Don't make them change their ways but make sure they will accept ours.
I have been living and working in this country for close to 20yrs. I think that if someone has been here for 15+ yrs and has been working, paying taxes and haven't been in any trouble at all, shouldn't have to do this test and be given the option of automatic citizenship.
cheers
I don't think it is the Citizenship test that determines a good Australian citizen. it was already hard enough to get the permanent residency in Australia. I think I have been already tested as a moral Citizen of Australia when I tried to get the visa. Practically, it takes people to get the citizenship for decades and those who have been in Australia over that many years would already have learned and experienced about Australia and its culture. Also, it is not easy for the people to go to the test locations as they have to sit on a test in a certain place. I think the test should be able to be done in, for example, the local Service Tasmania or any Medicare centres. I am in Ulverstone and it is very hard for me take the test regularly as I have to travel very far. And that affects my work shift too.
Agree with you when it comes to the PR, you really do have to show everything about yourself. I have been here for 8 years now and I am about to take the test. Interestingly enough, I can't always score 100%, hence it tells me that if living here (both working & studing) for so many years is insufficient to get a perfect score, then maybe the test is a bit too much.
I love the idea - great. All people interested staying in this country MUST agree to stay here under the terms and conditions of the contry. If you do not like it - stay where you are.
People that can not speak English, should not be allowed to become residents.
most people have already lived in australia for years and class themselves aussies, why have a test,we are going to live here anyway.what about the people who dont speak english is this fair.
Those people who don't speak English should not be allowed to be citizens of Australia. I think a sound knowledge of English is the minimum you can expect from someone who wants to live in an English-speaking country.
The language used should be simple to cater for people who have not had the opportunity to be schooled in their country of origin. ESL teachers need to be consulted when revising the test
I've been an Aussie for 30+ years and I didn't score 100% ... which means the test is too hard. For a start, I easily *misread* one of the questions ... will you nix my citizenship because I didn't read the question correctly? And I'm an English speaker from birth -- it was just a mistake. Imagine how rough this is going to be on "the new chum" to whom "the language of Milton and the Bible," to quote G.B. Shaw, is his/her second or third language! Get real people -- have the test, but make it simpler.
I think to make the test a condition of becoming an Australian is unfair. I'm Australian born and I can't pass the test probably because I have no interest in politics or some of the other subjects. A new Australian will eventually learn what has to be known to live here why make it a condition that he or she learns what amounts to useless information.
I dont believe the test is needed in all cases. I have lived in Australia for 32years and think I should be exempt from taking the test. I tried to apply for citizenship (prior to the test) online but I was not recognized as being in Australia. Even though I had traveled on a passport back and forth over the years and been paying taxes for the 32 years living in Australia.
But they have done at least 12 years of Australian education and have learned about things those haven't even heard of who have to take the test. If one wants to become an Australian citizen, one should follow the rules and meet the requirements, not complain. After all, noone asked them to be here, they want to come and live here.
Why would Australians need to know the answers? It's their country! They didn't CHOOSE to become Australians. People who CHOOSE Australia as a place to live should not complain that they have to know things that the locals don't know.
the citizenship test its a right dicision of the government to give gain everyone about the ethnic.culture.politic.especially the privillage to all citizen a become a voter
i think the test hould be a bit more simple because people who are born in australia dont know half the answers to the questions that are been asked in the test i think the test should be changed and make it 10 questions mean in the end you are bound to to pass the test if you put your time and effort into it but after what?in the end a hopefully you will get ur australian citinzenship . what other country has these tests to get a citeezship???i think they should be no test
there neva was a test before... so i think having a test is good, but it should not be so hard.
who is going to rememba these questions later? i bet not even born australian know the nswers of these questions.
It would be fairer if Australians knew the answers to the questions other people from different lands are supposed to know.
Do not mind learning about Australia but at least ensure questions are based on more laws, lifestyle etc.
I am a born and bred Australian having only been outside my country once. I have been trying to pass the citizenship test but have failed. How are new immigrants supposed to know questions about our government system that I have never heard of myself. I am well educated but now it seems I know very little.
We never asked you to leave your scums and become a part of our country, its you and your countrymen who come here in hoardes and by hook or crook they just want to hang on and never leave with out contributing,So STFU ,if you dont want to answer FO back to your scum

yes its rely good idea
am happy that i had exam to get my citizen , cause i learn many thing that i don't know before and i think that is important to now for every resident of Australia. Good luck for all. samia
New CITIZENSHIP book ismore intersting then old one.It is not confusing about when they happend. We love to know about aus &their belive, but not condistionally.
Yes its a good idea if you have just moved to Australia. I sat the test last year I am 51 years old and have lived here since I was 5 years of age most of my life. I thought it was ridiculous as all my schooling was here and I married and had children here.
it tests about ur understanding of english literacy more than ur knowledge of australian culture.I have studied in australia for five years (yr9 to uni) n i still didn't understand some of the critical words that appeared on the questions.
People who have no knowledge of english before they arrived in Australia. they certainly would feel difficult to do the test even if they have done their 400 hr english training.
My recommendation is to simplify questions (ways of questioning). Don't use too many sophisticated vocabularies.
Thanks very much.
Of course I agree with the test but the first thing should be allegance to Queen and country and if anyone is found to break that they should be Jailed or automatically Deported from Australia and or Both. No second chance or Questions Asked. Only the best of People are good enough for Australia.
Australia is so becoming a republic and leaving the commonwealth, the queen is just a public figure now.
And you ideals are moronic, only the best of people are good enough from australia? Thats why this country was founded on convicts? Where Brtain decided to send criminals? Yes, I can see the connection.. the best of Criminals are good enough for Australia?
Whatever happened then, happened then. Now the situation has changed. We don't take any more convicts, do we? And we can set standards for what kind of people we want. We are already doing it by having an skilled immigration program that's quite tough, so it's not easy to get in. Testing is perfectly logical. We want NEW people to be BETTER, even BETTER than ourselves: this is WHY the test is so "hard", and this is why the argument "even Australians can't answer these questions' is totally idiotic. It's the WHOLE IDEA!!!
Why did this test happening now and not before. People had personal problems in their country, thats why they came here. People who came here does not know english,; so which one do they have to learn, english or the test.
Emphasis should be on living as and with australians.respecting and absorbing the culture and the need to live and understand the full meaning of democracy.
